In May of 2007, the Catholic Newman Center at Truman State was lost to fire. While no one was injured, the incident left the Catholic community at Truman State University without its meeting place. The Newman Center provided them a location not only to celebrate Mass, but also to study, socialize, lounge and plan charity events.
A week before the fall semester began, Michael Killeen and other members of Killeen Studio arrived in Kirksville with a mini-architectural studio. Extensive design charrettes were held with church leaders, students and board members to determine the form and inspiration behind the facility. CAD and 3D software were combined with hand sketches and comp marker renderings all influenced by the church community. The consensus was to create a place of worship and a home away from home for students. |

A dedication Mass was held in November 2008 to celebrate the opening of of the new 10,000 square foot Newman Center. The new facility boasts a large multipurpose room, library, offices, kitchen and support spaces.

The exterior presents a more welcoming appearance than did the old facility, and the interior layout provides a more cohesive flow. |
